Japan's classic first-timer route — Tokyo's neon-to-shrine contrasts, the Hakone onsen and Mount Fuji views, Kyoto's 1,000 red torii gates at Fushimi Inari, Osaka's Dotonbori street food, and Nara's bowing deer. Travel by bullet train with a Japan Rail Pass, stay in a mix of Western hotels and one traditional ryokan, and eat your way through izakayas, ramen counters, and kaiseki dinners.
The "Golden Route" is what Japanese travel agencies have recommended to first-time visitors for decades — Tokyo to Hakone to Kyoto to Osaka, with Nara as a day trip. It's a proven itinerary because it works: you see ancient and modern Japan in a single continuous arc, and the bullet train does the moving for you.
What we've added to the standard route: an overnight in a ryokan with a private onsen, a morning at the Tsukiji Outer Market before the crowds, an evening food walk through Osaka's Dotonbori, and a hands-on experience (choose from a tea ceremony, a calligraphy lesson, or a knife-sharpening demo at a Kyoto bladesmith).
